Native of Luxembourg, Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was a complete and prolific artist : photographer, painter, director, gardener… He is particularly renowned for his fashion photos which are poetic, artistic and often inspired by Antique Greece.
The photographer exhibited his work in Paris in 1901 ; he became member of the London photographic society and met the French sculptor Rodin.
Art lover, he is the first to expose modern art in 1905 ( Cézanne, Picasso…). He started to realize fashion photoshoots of the Poiret dresses in 1911.
Even if he was mainly a fashion photographer, he also had a role during the World War I. In 1917, he was charged to shoot the aerial reconnaissance in France.
For 15 years (1923-1938), he had been photographer of the editor Condé Nast. His photos had been published in prestigious US magazines : Vogue and Vanity Fair. In 1932, he realized the first colored photo used as a cover of Vogue.
Curator at the MoMa, he exposed photos several times at the MoMa in New York (“The family man” in 1955 and 1961).
