With its 8.64 hectares, Place de la Concorde is the largest square in the capital. It is located between the Champs-Élysées to the west, the Tuileries Gardens to the east, the Rue Royale and the Church of the Madeleine to the north and the Seine to the south.

In 1748, at the height of the reign of Louis XV, the City of Paris wanted to erect an equestrian statue to its glory . A square was needed to highlight it. It is the King’s first architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel who elaborated this square. It was completed in 1772 and was called “Place Louis XV”.

At the time of the French Revolution, “Place Louis XV” was renamed “Place de la Révolution” on August 11, 1792, the day after the abolition of the monarchy. Louis XVI was decapited there on January 21st 1793.
