The vintage costume jewelry house Monet

Monet Jewelry was launched in 1937 by the brothers Michael and Joseph Chernow in New York. Before, their company Monocraft Products created handbags with gold-plated appliqués and monograms. With Monet, they wanted to create fine jewels using high quality materials and affordable for all the women. Monet jewels were recognizable by the open metalwork (gold and silver) and the straight edges.

From 1969 to 1989, General Mills possessed Monet. In the early 1980s, the company obtained the Yves St. Laurent licence for costume jewelry. From 1985 to 1994, Monet became part of the Crystal Brands Apparel Group. This company purchased two other costume jewelry lines (Trifari and Marvella) and became the largest costume jewelry maker in the world. From 1994 to 2000, Monet was part of Chase Capital Partners. The group signed the fashion designer Christian Lacroix in 1995 for a 5 year licencing. Since 2000, Liz Claiborne, Inc. has been producing Monet Jewelry.
