John Rawlings (1912-1970) was a mid-20th-century American fashion photographer who worked for Condé Nast (Vogue and Glamour) during three decades (1936-1960s). He learned alongside Horst P. Horst and George Platt Lynes when he was their assistant at Condé Nast from 1936. During his career, he collaborated with Glamour and the American, British and French Vogue.
He was a prolific photographer with more than 200 covers for Vogue and Glamour and 30,000 photos in archive. In addition to his fashion photoshoots, he made advertisings and portraits of actors. According to Charles Dare Scheips Jr., former director of the Conde Nast Archives, John Rawlings was “the first major Conde Nast photographer to demonstrate a truly American eye.” Unfortunately, he never obtained the same fame than his peers such as Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst and George Hoyningen-Huene. Nevertheless, his work remains a source of inspiration for current fashion photographers.
