Louise Emma Augusta Dahl (1895-1989) was an American fashion photographer. She is mainly known for her work in the magazine Harper’s Bazaar from 1936 to 1958. She collaborated with the fashion publishers Carmel Snow, Diane Vreeland and the art director Alexey Brodovitch. The models Evelyn Tripp and
Mary Jane Russell posed very often for her. Her work had influenced the photographers Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.
She produced glamour, sophisticated, lively photographs of emancipated and liberated women. Dahl-Wolfe had the particulary to shoot outside with natural light. She used to travel in foreign countries to produce photoshoots (South-America, Spain, Africa…). She invented “the environmental fashion photography”. The background was very important in her work.
