Born in Lausanne (Switzerland, 1845), Eugène Grasset was a French engraver, poster artist and decorator. He co-founded with Hector Guimard the “Society of Decorative Artists” and with René Lalique the “Society of French Decorative Art”. He is a recognized Art Nouveau artist like Alphonse Mucha.
Art Nouveau is an artistic style that developed in the late 19th century, initially in Belgium and France. The name itself is that of a boutique in Paris, “La Maison de l’Art Nouveau“, opened in 1895 by the German art dealer Siegfried Bing. At the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau affected all of the plastic arts, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture and decorative arts. Art nouveau was characterized by forms inspired by nature, where curves dominate.
