Les Folies bergères in Paris : Art Deco splendor

On May 2, 1869, the Folies Bergère opened its doors, offering a unique blend of theater and café-concert. The Folies Bergère hosted some of the biggest names in live entertainment.

Charlie Chaplin, then 18 years old, made his debut there, and Maurice Chevalier shone on its stage in 1909. Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier performed on the Folies Bergère stage, bringing the venue international fame through their iconic performances.

In 1926, the façade was completely redesigned in the Art Deco style by the sculptor Pico, inspired by the dancer Lila Nikolska, star of the revue Un vent de folie. At the same time, a new attraction hall, the Danse du Ventre, was created beneath the lobby.

The program for the Folies-Bergère revue La Folie du jour in 1926 featured a new star: Josephine Baker. She performed a wild Charleston, a dance she helped popularize in France.
