Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony ; it belongs to the Quartz family of minerals. This gemstone is often formed by successive accumulations of various colours or tones. There are also single-colored agates.
Agates can have various colours : black, white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple and gray. There are many varieties of agates among which : carnelian, sard, onyx, eye agate and fire agate.
There were a lot of agates in a Sicilian river named “achates”, that’s why the word “agate” was chosen to designate this stone. Agates are found in Myanmar, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Botswana, India, Australia and in the USA.
