The French Jean Louis Berthault (1907-1997) called “Jean Louis” was a Hollywood costume designer who dressed many movie stars but particulary the fabulous Rita Hayworth. The strapless black gown he had done for Rita Hayworth in “Gilda” marked cinema history. He was nominated 14 times and won an Oscar for his creations in “The Solid Gold Cadillac” (1956).
He dressed beautifully Rita Hayworth in several movies : “Tonight and every night” (1945), “Gilda” (1946), “Down To Earth” (1947), “The Lady from Shanghai” (1948), “The Loves of Carmen” (1948), “Affair in Trinidad” (1952), “Miss Sadie Thompson”, “Salome” (1953) and “Pale Joey” (1957). The gown worn by Rita Hayworth in “Gilda” was splendid and unforgettable. My favourite movies of Rita Hayworth are “Gilda” and “The lady of Shanghai”.
He designed wonderful gowns for a lot of famous actresses like Loretta Young (“The Loretta Young Show”), Marylin Monroe (“The misfits” and “Something’s got to give”), Shirley MacLaine (“Gambit”); Marlene Dietrich (“The Monte Carlo story” and “Judgement at Nuremberg”) ; Kim Novak (“Picnic”, “Bell, book and candle” and “Pal Joey”), Claudette Colbert (“Tomorrow is forever”) ; Julie Andrews (“Thoroughly modern Millie”)…
