Favourite 1960s movies

My top 5 : Splendor in the grass, Charade, Les tontons flingueurs, La grande vadrouille and West side story.

Charade” directed by Stanley Donen and starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

“A woman (Audrey Hepburn) is pursued by several men who want a fortune her murdered husband had stolen.”A great combination of comedy, romance and thriller taking place in Paris. The couple formed by Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn is lovely and glamour. The clothes made by Hubert de Givenchy Audrey Hepburn wears in the movie are exquisite and very elegant.

Splendor in the grass” directed by Elia Kazan in 1961 and starring Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty.

“A fragile Kansas girl’s (Natalie Wood) love for a handsome young man (Warren Beatty) from the town’s most powerful family drives her to heartbreak and madness.” Natalie Wood is phenomenal in this wonderful movie in particular in the scene of bath. Warren Beatty and her form a charming and an unforgettable couple.

Les barbouzes” directed by Georges Lautner in 1964 and starring Lino Ventura, Francis Blanche and Mireille Darc.

“After the death of an armaments manufacturer, an international group of spies is drawn into a high-stakes battle of wits to obtain the valuable military patents which have been inherited by the lovely widow (Mireille Darc).”

“Having recently been uprooted to Milan, Rocco (Alain Delon) and his four brothers each look for a new way in life when a prostitute (Annie Girardot) between Rocco and his brother Simone (Renato Salvatori). It is a tragic and impossible love story.


West side story” directed by Robert Wise in 1961 and starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymis, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris.

“Two youngsters from rival New York City gangs Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony fall in love, but tensions between their respective friends build toward tragedy.” It is a wonderful musical movie. The music of Leonardo Bernstein is legendary. I like particularly the songs “In America”, “Jet song” and “I feel pretty”.

“Les tontons flingueurs” directed by Georges Lautner in 1963 and starring Lino Ventura, Francis Blanche and Bertrand Blier.

“Ex-gangster Fernand (Lino Ventura) receives a call from a dying friend, a mob boss nicknamed the Mexican. The doomed mobster talks Fernand into taking care of some criminal business and his niece.” The scene in the kitchen is very funny and famous!
